Muka Vhatti takes the win!

Live Bands & Performers category

For the first time in the history of the National Campus Music Competition, a hip-hop artist has been crowned the winner of the Live Bands & Performers category.

MUKA VHATTI is made up of past and present students of Murdoch University in Perth, Western Australia. Front man, Tamuka Chimanya says that 'the opportunity to fly to Sydney for UniSounds has been one of my proudest moments so far.... the hype i am feeling is unbelievable'.

Having relocated to Perth, from Zimbabwe in 2005 with his family, Tamuka's passion for music started young and he did his first performances in year 9 at high school. Now at twenty years of age, having recently lost his biggest fan, his Dad, at 49 to a long fight with cancer, Tamuka has decided to follow his dream of a career in music 'because if not now, then when? Life is short!'

Over the past two years, Muka Vhatti has been performing regularly in the hip-hop scenes of Perth and Melbourne, most recently touring and collaborating with renowned hip-hop artist Arno Faraji 'his journey has inspired me! The sky is the limit!'. The hard work has paid off, recently going into the studio with Sydney producer, Tasker to create a proper banger which they will be working on a music video for over the coming months, so keep an eye out for it to drop.

'Music is my passion and i have so much i want to share with the world', and UniSounds is so proud to be a part of the Muka Vhatti journey which is only just beginning.

2018 Finalist Releases Debut EP

The Live Final of UniSounds'18 was the first time that Danny Donehue had performed in front of a crowd, but look at him now. Donehue, an electronic music producer from La Trobe University has just released his debut EP titled 'Perfect System'. Download it here

"Dj-ing for the first time was quite nerve-wracking for me and there was no place to hide it. I quickly learned from the crowd that it is expected for the DJ to move a little to set the energy and so here is my somewhat awkward DJ dancin' haha. I am keen to hopefully get playing again sometime soon™.

Really looking forward to releasing the EP (consisting of the 4 original songs performed at the Unisounds Finals 2018)... and I'm currently working on a bunch of music including a powerful progressive trance tune that may get some killer vocals on it"

Latest Release from 2018 Finalists, Nelipot

With the feel of British sounding indie-rock, think Arctic Monkeys or The Vaccines, take a look at Nelipot who represented University of Newcastle at the UniSounds'18 Live FInal.

The trio have just dropped a post punk-tinged track, Garden Hose Rainbows, check out the video below. Shot in the lead singer's family home, the video is a quirky but heartfelt insight into the dichotomy that is wanting to fit in but also wanting to be true to yourself as who you are.

Nelipot bassist Jordyn says, "The video was shot inside a spare room at our lead singer’s family home. They gave us free reign of the space for the weekend and we were able to rework the room to turn it into a set. The set was so small that none of the lighting equipment/rigs could fit in the room, so Mitch (the director) had to setup ladders outside the house and build DIY mounts for the lights to shine into the set from the outside windows. All costuming and props for the shoot were found in our houses.”

It's got a bit of a surreal vibe - particularly in the enigmatic characters it features - but its anthemic chorus comes complete with the lyrics on screen like a foreign film's subtitles, so you'll be singing along in no time.

Mr. Sauce takes the win at UniSounds'18 Final

Tonight saw Mr. Sauce awarded the winning spot at the UniSounds ’18 Grand Final at The Lansdowne Hotel in Sydney. Out of the seven finalists who took to the stage, the Newcastle five piece Mr. Sauce walked away with the top prize of an international recording deal from Dine Alone Records and a promotions package. But this isn’t the end; as Mr. Sauce start out on an exciting new recording project, the finale of the 2018 competition launched the opening of UniSounds ’19.

“The soulful sweet tunes of a man of equal soul and sweetness”… so he may say himself, however Newcastle’s Mr. Sauce can be forgiven for hitting the nail on the head. His enchantingly curated tracks are infused with jazz, funk, blues and pop, from gentle doo wop swing to riviera stylings there is a dreaming optimism to Mr. Sauce which is irresistible, easily comparable to Szymon or Devendra Banhart.  And all the while staking claim to some of the best original material we’ve heard in a while".

As Mr. Sauce sit down to table with Dine Alone Records, last year’s competition also comes full circle with winners Jones The Cat ready to release their double A-side single through the label. The band opened the UniSounds ’18 Grand Final with a preview of their upcoming release. We are stoked to partner with Dine Alone Records once again, continuing their invaluable support for the UniSounds program.

The UniSounds '18 Grand Final also welcomed the incredible Alice Ivy to the stage and to the judging panel; joining other industry representatives to select the winner. The inaugural prize for the most supportive university campus also made it's first appearance this year, with University of Newcastletaking the honours. In total, 17% of entrants hailing from Newcastle, the Central Coast campus can claim UniSounds '18 winners Mr. Sauce, plus two more out of the seven finalists - as well as last year's winners Jones The Cat

The Grand Final for this year's competition was also the launch date for UniSounds '19. As of midnight the UniSounds website is now open to students looking to enter the 2019 program. And we are also excited to announce Furphy Beer as the new sponsor partner for UniSounds '19 along with the launch.

Seven Finalists Vying for Glory at UniSounds'18 Final

From a sweaty live music stage in Glebe we last night revealed the 2018 Unisounds Competition Finalists. And in a first for the 29-year-old competition, judges were forced to add an additional finalist due to the tight final count. What was four, became FIVE, deserving entrants selected by our expert judging panel to join two publicly voted Wild Cards for the final event this September 19th at the iconic Lansdowne Hotel Sydney.

The announcement was presented by the 2017 winners Jones The Cat as a live stream from stage at the last of their month-long Sydney residency – catch the announcement here. Jones The Cat know how impactful this prize can be as they are currently in the process of setting up their global release through Dine Alone Records following months of touring and recording.

Having already named Ashley Iona (University of Sydney) from the live category, and electronic artist Danny Donahue (La Trobe University) as the publicly voted Wild Cards, the five remaining finalists now round out the full line-up of competitors for finals and are drawn from right across the country.

They are:

  1. Mr Sauce (University of Newcastle)
  2. Nelipot (University of Newcastle)
  3. Miccy (Griffith University)
  4. The Pits (University of Newcastle)
  5. Evanda (Curtin University Perth)

With the life changing prize of an international recording deal from Dine Alone Records and promotions package at stake, a gold class panel of industry experts have worked hard to select these promising artists who have everything it takes to be part of the next generation of Australian music.

On September 19th each of the seven finalists will be flown to Sydney to participate in an intensive mentoring experience with our industry panel throughout the afternoon, with doors opening to the public for the live show at 7pm. Jones The Cat will open the live event, with a soon to be announced killer headline act set to close the show.

The finalists will battle it out for audience’s enjoyment and the judging panel’s consideration, with the 2018 Unisounds Winner announced at the end of the night.

The event is free admission to the public, and audience members will have every opportunity to become a winner as well. With rad drinks specials from major sponsor Summer Bright Lager, any punters who stick around to support every competing artist will be in with a chance to win $3000 worth of prizes. Including $1000 VISA card from TAG, a vinyl pack from Dine Alone Records/ Hub Artist Services, a Levi's and Redback Boots wardrobe, plus heaps more.
