Somnus Lak

Somnus Lak

Somnus Lak is a symptom of guitar driven influence - surging with the raw energy of the nineties, but blended with a digitised spectrum that converts soundscapes into usable melodies. Like underwater theatre, the music plays like a slow-motion dance, sometimes reaching deeper into the source and breaking it wide open. It is a mixture of swirling synths, crunchy guitars and beats that range from ambient glitch to jazz based spontaneity. Somnus Lak has been making music for over 20 years and his influence is an amalgamation of styles that harp back to his immersion as a drummer in the melodic, grunge rock style of bands such as Smashing Pumpkins and Sonic Youth in the nineties. Later exposure to artists like Trent Reznor, DJ Shadow and Amon Tobin opened a palette of electronic possibility and the the music attempts to reproduce modern production while maintaining a live, sometimes vintage aesthetic. This, alongside a love of film soundtracks, bring emotion and ambience to the music that builds on soundscapes and drives the melodies. Heavily processed vocals or spoken word samples sometimes add texture to the music, but the melodies are mostly instrumental.
